Common terns (Sterna hirundo) are extremely fast, rapidly moving around in the air, and constantly but irregularly changing direction during their search for fish. They are among the most difficult birds to photograph, not because you don´t see them or because they are distant but simply because of their fast movements in the air. To catch them in the camera´s view finder we used the ´continuous high speed´ function, giving 9 frames per second. Even then you are not certain to get the pictures you want. During our stay by the tern colony we were able to see the terns dive for food and on some of the images you can see the bird´s bodies completely submerged, with only the wings above the sea surface! In succeeding pictures you can see the bird´s heads coming to the surface again, with water splashing in all directions. What a play to witness!
